Mellema Scores a Career-High 27 as Cowgirls Fall at Gonzaga
Cowgirls' Late Rally Falls Short
LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Wyoming Cowgirls basketball team fell to the Gonzaga Bulldogs 88-79 on Saturday afternoon inside the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane, Wash.
The Cowgirls (5-6) were led by junior guard Alba Mellema, who scored a career-high 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point range.
Gonzaga Too Much for Cowgirls
The Bulldogs (8-3) were led by senior guard Yvonne Ejim, who scored 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field.
Gonzaga led by as many as 14 points in the first half, but the Cowgirls rallied to cut the lead to five at the half, 43-38.
The Bulldogs extended their lead back to 14 in the second half, but the Cowgirls again rallied to cut the lead to five with just over three minutes remaining in the game.
However, Gonzaga hit some key free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
The Cowgirls shot 42.9 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range.
Gonzaga shot 47.4 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three-point range.
The Bulldogs also outrebounded the Cowgirls 37-27.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Tuesday when they host the Northern Colorado Bears at the Arena-Auditorium.
