Zelenskyy Promises to Sign Law on Same-Sex Marriages
Ukraine's President Zelenskyy has pledged to sign a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, a move that has been met with mixed reactions in the country.
The bill was passed by Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, on June 8, 2023, with 234 lawmakers voting in favor. The legislation would allow same-sex couples to register their relationships, granting them the same legal rights as heterosexual couples.
The bill has been praised by LGBTQ+ rights groups, who have long campaigned for the recognition of same-sex relationships in Ukraine. However, it has also faced opposition from conservative groups, who argue that it goes against traditional family values.
In a statement, Zelenskyy said that he would sign the bill into law once it had been reviewed by the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. He said he believed that all citizens of Ukraine should have the same rights, regardless of their sexual orientation.
"Every person has the right to happiness, love, and a family. We must respect and protect this right," Zelenskyy said.
The signing of the bill would make Ukraine one of the few countries in Eastern Europe to legalize same-sex marriage. It would also be a significant step forward for LGBTQ+ rights in the country.
However, it is unclear how the law will be implemented in practice. Ukraine is a socially conservative country, and there is still widespread discrimination against LGBTQ+ people.
It is hoped that the legalization of same-sex marriage will help to change attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people in Ukraine and create a more inclusive and tolerant society.
