Russian Fishing Agency ship provided emergency assistance to two longliners in the Far East
25 crew members were evacuated to the rescue vessel, no injuries or fatalities have been reported
On August 20, 2023, the Russian Fishing Agency rescue vessel Admiral Vladivostok provided emergency assistance to two longliners - Amur-2835 and Amur-2833 - which requested help in connection with a severe storm in the Sea of Okhotsk, the Rosrybolovstvo press service reported.
Request for assistance
According to the report, the rescue coordination center of the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport (Rosmorrechflot) received signals from the longliners at 07:00 Moscow time. The vessels were disabled due to engine failure caused by the storm, and requested immediate assistance, as they were drifting dangerously close to the shore.
Emergency response
The Admiral Vladivostok rescue ship was dispatched to the scene, and managed to reach the first stricken longliner, the Amur-2833, within 6 hours. The rescue team boarded the vessel, evacuated 13 crew members to the rescue ship, and began towing the longliner to safety.
Next, the rescue ship reached the Amur-2835 and evacuated the remaining 12 crew members on board. The longliner, however, sank in the storm, and the rescue ship proceeded to tow only the crew members back to shore.
No injuries or fatalities
All 25 crew members of both vessels were safely evacuated to the rescue ship, and no injuries or fatalities have been reported. The crew members are currently receiving medical assistance and psychological support on board the rescue ship.
An investigation into the incident is underway to determine the exact cause of the engine failure and the sinking of the Amur-2835.
