Nigeria, Ghana Lose as Rwanda, Niger Advance at CHAN
Nigeria's Super Eagles and Ghana's Black Galaxies crashed out of the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Algeria after defeats on Tuesday.
Rwanda's Amavubi defeated Nigeria 1-0 in Oran, while Niger stunned Ghana 2-0 in Constantine, securing their places in the quarterfinals.
Nigeria's Disappointment
Nigeria, who were runners-up in the last edition of CHAN, failed to live up to expectations. They finished third in Group C, behind Morocco and Madagascar, and their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages were dashed by Rwanda's win.
Rwanda took the lead in the 28th minute through a penalty converted by Olivier Niyonzima. The Super Eagles struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the match and were unable to find an equalizer.
Ghana's Shock Defeat
Ghana's Black Galaxies also suffered a disappointing exit, losing 2-0 to Niger's Mena. Niger took the lead in the first half through a stunning free-kick by Souleymane Moussa.
Despite Ghana's efforts to come back into the match, Niger doubled their lead in the second half when Boubacar Hainikoye converted a penalty.
Rwanda and Niger Advance
Rwanda and Niger will now face each other in the quarterfinals, with the winner to meet the victor of the match between Madagascar and Mozambique.
The quarterfinal matches are scheduled to be played on Saturday, January 28.
Conclusion
Nigeria and Ghana's exits from CHAN are a major disappointment for their fans and football enthusiasts across Africa. Rwanda and Niger, meanwhile, have shown great determination and skill and will be hoping to continue their impressive runs in the knockout stages.
