Tuesday's weather: Severe thunderstorms in KZN and Mpumalanga, warm to hot and very hot elsewhere
Thunderstorms expected across eastern South Africa on Tuesday
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms in several parts of the country on Tuesday, October 11, 2023. The warning is in effect for the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Mpumalanga, where heavy rain, hail, and strong winds are expected.
The SAWS has advised residents in these areas to be prepared for possible flooding and damage to infrastructure. The thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon and evening.
Hot and very hot conditions elsewhere in South Africa
While severe thunderstorms are expected in KZN and Mpumalanga, the rest of South Africa is expected to experience warm to hot and very hot conditions on Tuesday.
The SAWS has issued a heatwave warning for the following areas:
- The Northern Cape
- The Free State
- Gauteng
- North West
- Limpopo
Temperatures in these areas are expected to reach the mid- to high-30s Celsius. The SAWS has advised residents in these areas to stay hydrated and to avoid spending prolonged periods of time outdoors during the hottest hours of the day.

- Seek shelter in a sturdy building.
- Stay away from windows.
- Avoid driving through flooded areas.
- If you are outside, seek shelter under a sturdy tree or in a ditch.
