Texas Tech Red Raiders Make Their Mark at No. 22 in USA TODAY Coaches Poll
Lubbock, Texas -
The Texas Tech Red Raiders have made a significant leap in the latest USA TODAY Coaches Poll, climbing from unranked to No. 22 after an impressive start to the 2023 season.
The Red Raiders have won their first two games of the season, including a 33-30 overtime victory over the No. 16-ranked Houston Cougars in their season opener. Tech then followed that up with a 56-23 win over the FCS Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks.
Dynamic Offense
The Red Raiders' success so far this season has been largely due to their dynamic offense, which is averaging 44.5 points per game. Quarterback Donovan Smith has been efficient, completing 68.8% of his passes for 554 yards and 6 touchdowns in the first two games.
Running back SaRodorick Thompson has also been a key contributor, rushing for 181 yards and 3 touchdowns on 34 carries. And their wide receiving corps, led by Loic Fouonji and Jerand Bradley, has combined for 37 catches, 494 yards, and 4 touchdowns.
Stingy Defense
The Red Raiders' defense has also played a crucial role in their success. They have allowed just 24.5 points per game, which ranks 22nd in the FBS. Linebacker Krishon Merriweather leads the team with 16 tackles, while cornerback Rayshawn Williams has recorded 2 interceptions.
Upcoming Schedule
The Red Raiders will face a tough test in their next game when they travel to face the No. 5-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus. Ohio State is one of the top teams in the country and will be a major challenge for the Red Raiders.
If Texas Tech can pull off an upset against Ohio State, it will send a strong message that they are a team to be reckoned with in the Big 12 Conference and the College Football Playoff race.
