Portugal held to 0-0 draw by battling Croatia in Nations League stalemate
Portugal were held to a 0-0 stalemate by a resilient Croatia side in UEFA Nations League Group A3 action on Thursday.
Despite fielding a star-studded line-up including Cristiano Ronaldo, who was making his 190th international appearance to equal the world record, the hosts failed to break down a determined Croatian defense.
The point leaves Portugal top of the group with seven points from three games, while Croatia are third with two points.
Ronaldo, who had scored four goals in his previous three appearances for Portugal, was well marshalled by the Croatian defense and had few clear sights of goal.
The best chance of the match fell to Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva in the second half, but his shot was well saved by Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.
Croatia had their moments in the match, particularly in the first half, but were unable to make their pressure count.
Andrej Kramaric had a good chance to put Croatia ahead in the 20th minute, but his shot was blocked by Portugal defender Ruben Dias.
Croatia continued to press in the second half, but Portugal held firm to secure a point.
The result leaves both sides with plenty to play for in the remaining Nations League fixtures.
Portugal will travel to face Czech Republic on Sunday, while Croatia will host Sweden.
