Officials: Wildfire near Lakewood Country Club burns 33 acres of land
Lakewood, WA —
A wildfire burning near the Lakewood Country Club has burned 33 acres of land, according to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The fire was reported at about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10, and is currently 0% contained.
Evacuations have been ordered for the following areas:
- The area north of 112th Street South between Gravelly Lake Drive Southwest and Steilacoom Boulevard Southwest
- The area south of 120th Street South between Gravelly Lake Drive Southwest and 104th Avenue Southwest
The DNR is urging residents in the affected areas to evacuate immediately. The fire is burning in heavy timber and brush, and is moving quickly. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
As of Thursday morning, about 150 firefighters are battling the blaze. Air tankers and helicopters are also being used to fight the fire. The Red Cross has set up an evacuation center at the Lakewood Recreation Center.
The DNR is asking the public to avoid the area of the fire. Smoke from the fire may be visible for miles around. Residents with respiratory conditions should take precautions.
