1794: Four warships of the United States Navy attack several Barbary Coast pirate ships near the coast of Tunisia. This engagement is the first in which American forces fight formally under the flag of the United States.

1863: President Abraham Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

1942: The Battle of Stalingrad begins as German forces launch Operation Uranus and attack Soviet positions in and around Stalingrad, Russia.

1969: Apollo 12, the second manned mission to the Moon, lands on the Moon's surface.

1977: Egyptian President Anwar Sadat becomes the first Arab leader to visit Israel, where he meets with Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and addresses the Israeli Knesset.

2013: The European Union and the United States reach an agreement to suspend the collection of metadata from European Union citizens by the National Security Agency.

2015: The United Nations Climate Change Conference begins in Paris, France. The conference is attended by representatives from 195 countries, who are negotiating a new agreement to combat climate change.

2016: The first person to receive a genetically modified pig heart transplant, David Bennett, dies at the age of 57.

2021: NASA launches the Lucy mission, a spacecraft that will study the Trojan asteroids, a group of asteroids that orbit the Sun at the same distance as Jupiter.
