1794: Four warships of the United States Navy attack several Barbary Coast pirate ships near the coast of Tunisia. This engagement is the first in which American forces fight formally under the flag of the United States.
1863: President Abraham Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
1942: The Battle of Stalingrad begins as German forces launch Operation Uranus and attack Soviet positions in and around Stalingrad, Russia.
1969: Apollo 12, the second manned mission to the Moon, lands on the Moon's surface.
1977: Egyptian President Anwar Sadat becomes the first Arab leader to visit Israel, where he meets with Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and addresses the Israeli Knesset.
