Manhattan Knife Attacks Leave Two Dead, One Injured
On Thursday, August 11, 2023, the New York Police Department (NYPD) arrested a suspect in connection with a series of knife attacks in Manhattan that left two people dead and one person injured.
The attacks occurred over a period of several hours in the Hell's Kitchen and Chelsea neighborhoods of Manhattan. The first attack took place at approximately 1:30 p.m. on 9th Avenue and West 44th Street, where a 35-year-old man was stabbed and killed.
Suspect Identified and Arrested
The NYPD has identified the suspect as a 47-year-old man named Rolando Barrero. He was arrested without incident at approximately 4:30 p.m. on 10th Avenue and West 46th Street.
Barrero has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. He is currently being held without bail at the Manhattan Detention Center.
Investigation Ongoing
The NYPD is continuing to investigate the motive behind the attacks. Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said that the attacks appear to be random and that there is no evidence of terrorism.
The victims of the attacks have been identified as 35-year-old Miguel Angel Villalobos and 48-year-old Tsion Tekle. The injured victim is a 68-year-old woman who is currently in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital.
