New Jersey Wildfire Update: Hainesport and Lakewood Firefighters Battle Blaze
Current Situation
A wildfire broke out in the wooded areas of Hainesport, New Jersey, on July 22, 2023, and has since spread to nearby Lakewood. Firefighters from both towns are battling the blaze, assisted by the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.
As of July 23, the fire has burned approximately 200 acres and is still active. There are no reported injuries or damage to structures at this time.
Evacuations and Road Closures
Residents in the affected areas have been evacuated to Bancroft Lane Elementary School in Hainesport. Cove Court in Lakewood has also been evacuated.
The following roads are closed due to the fire:
- Bancroft Lane between Route 38 and Taunton Road
- Cove Court between Route 9 and Lexington Avenue
Cause and Containment
The cause of the wildfire is still under investigation. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service is leading containment efforts, with the assistance of local firefighters.
Firefighters are using a combination of ground and aerial resources to contain the blaze. Air tankers are dropping water and fire retardant on the flames, while ground crews are working to establish fire lines.
