Mississippi College Changing Name, Shutters Football Program
Private Baptist School Rebranding, Athletic Shift
Clinton, Miss. – Mississippi College, a private Baptist university founded in 1826, announced today that it will be changing its name to Mississippi University for the Arts and Sciences.
The name change is part of a broader rebranding effort that the university says will better reflect its mission and values. The school will also be discontinuing its football program, a move that will save the university money and allow it to focus more on its academic programs.
Rebranding and New Focus
The university says that the new name more accurately reflects its focus on the arts and sciences.
“Our new name better reflects who we are and what we do,” said Dr. Blake Thompson, president of Mississippi College.
The university will continue to offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts and sciences, including business, education, nursing, and social work.
Athletic Shift
The decision to discontinue the football program was made after a careful review of the university’s finances and academic priorities.
“This was a difficult decision, but it was the right one for our university,” said Thompson.
The university will continue to offer other sports, including basketball, baseball, softball, and track and field.
