Luis de la Fuente has defended his decision to rest some key players in the group stage match against Switzerland. The coach said that he wanted to avoid unnecessary risks and that he had faith in the players who would be replacing them.
"We have many players who can play at a high level and we must take care of them," said De la Fuente. "We have a long tournament ahead of us and we need to make sure that our players are fresh and ready to play."
Spain has already qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament, so De la Fuente was able to rest some of his key players without risking their chances of advancing. The coach said that he would be making more changes to the team in the knockout stages, but that he would still be fielding a strong side.
"We want to win every game, but we also need to be smart about how we use our players," said De la Fuente. "We have a lot of depth in our squad and we will be able to make changes without losing any quality."
Spain will face Switzerland on Tuesday in their final group stage match. The match will be played at the St. Jakob-Park in Basel.
