Jon Stewart ripped into President Donald Trump's meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Wednesday, calling it a "f------ disaster."
Stewart appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" to discuss the meeting, which took place in Singapore on Tuesday. Stewart said he was "appalled" by Trump's performance, saying that he "gave away the store" to Kim.
"He gave him everything he wanted," Stewart said. "He gave him legitimacy. He gave him a photo op. He gave him a stage to grandstand on. He gave him everything he wanted, and he got nothing in return."
Stewart also criticized Trump for his decision to meet with Kim without any preconditions. He said that this gave Kim a "huge advantage" in the negotiations.
"He had nothing to lose," Stewart said. "He could just sit there and smile and nod, and Trump would give him everything he wanted. And that's exactly what happened."
Stewart's comments were echoed by other critics of the meeting. Former CIA Director John Brennan said that Trump had "failed to achieve any meaningful concessions" from Kim. And former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said that the meeting had been a "missed opportunity" to make progress on denuclearization.
The White House has defended the meeting, saying that it was a "success." Trump himself said that he had "accomplished a lot" in the meeting. But critics say that the meeting was a major setback for U.S. foreign policy.
