Breaktime: Sudan Advance to Knockout Stage of Africa Cup of Nations
Angola Held, Sudan’s Victory Secured
In heartwarming fashion, Sudan beat Ghana yesterday amidst the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, proving that a slow start doesn't equate to a poor finish.
A goalless draw in their final Group C fixture against Angola was enough to see Sudan progress to the knockout stages of the tournament.
Both sides had to settle for a point, but it was Sudan who progressed as one of the four best third-placed finishers. Angola, playing in front of their home crowd in Luanda, failed to make the most of their chances.
Hard-fought Match
Sudan dominated possession early on, but Mohamed Abdelrahman missed a great chance to put them ahead, firing wide from close range.
Angola grew into the game and had chances of their own, with Gelson Dala and Ary Papel both going close.
But it was Sudan who took the lead against the run of play in the 31st minute. Saifeldin Malik fired home after a superb run and cross.
Back in the Game
Angola responded well and equalized just before half-time through Dala.
The second half was more even, with both sides having chances to win it.
But in the end, a draw was probably a fair result. Sudan will now face the runners-up from Group E in the knockout stages, while Angola are eliminated.
