The 23-year-old Spaniard opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a well-taken finish from close range. He then doubled his tally just before half-time with a stunning strike from outside the box.
Diaz completed his hat-trick in the 65th minute, converting a penalty after he was fouled in the area by Monza defender Marlon. The goal was his 10th of the season in all competitions, making him Milan’s top scorer.
Milan’s other goal was scored by Olivier Giroud, who netted a penalty in the 84th minute. Monza’s consolation goal came from Dany Mota in the 90th minute.
The victory was Milan’s fourth in a row in Serie A and moved them up to third place in the standings, one point behind second-placed Inter Milan and 18 points behind leaders Napoli.
