5 Tips for Riding Your Bike Safely
1. Start on the right foot
If you haven't ridden in a while, take some time to familiarize yourself with your bike again.
Adjust your seat, check your tires, and make sure everything is in working order.
And don't forget to wear a helmet!
2. Stick to the right side of the road
This is the law in most states, and it's the safest place for you to ride.
Make sure you're riding in the same direction as traffic, and always be aware of your surroundings.
If you're not comfortable riding on the road, try finding a bike path or trail.
3. Be mindful of cars
Even when you're riding in a bike lane, be aware of cars turning or pulling out.
Make eye contact with drivers before you cross in front of them, and be prepared to stop if necessary.
And never assume that a driver sees you.
4. Signal your turns
This is important for letting other cyclists and drivers know what you're planning to do.
Use your hand signals or turn signals, and make sure you give plenty of notice.
And always look over your shoulder before turning.
5. Be aware of the weather
If you're planning on riding in bad weather, make sure you're prepared.
Wear appropriate clothing, and be careful of slippery roads and reduced visibility.
If possible, try to avoid riding in bad weather altogether.
